Given a relatively small number of people with rare diseases around the world and a small demand market as well, it is not easy for rare disease patients to have access to items required for treatment. To build a more complete network of medical services for rare diseases in Taiwan, the Ministry of Health and Welfare, pursuant to the Rare Disease and Orphan Drug Act and pertinent regulations, has set up the Special Nutritional Food and Emergency Drug Logistics Center for Rare Diseases (Logistics Center) for the procurement, storage, and supply of national rare diseases’ nutrition products and drugs. Since 2012, China Medical University (CMU) has been chosen as the sole contractor in the nation for the Logistics Center and the team led by CMU Department of Pharmacy Director Yow-wen Hsieh serves as the executor.
